The next couple of blog posts will examine a few of the popular sites, Facebook and Google+, getting into the content of these pages and just how popular they really are. The statistics may blow your mind.
When talking about social networking sites, Facebook
seems to be the topic nowadays, and why wouldn't it be. Undoubtedly,
Facebook is the largest social networking site mankind has ever known with over
800 million users worldwide and close to 200 million users in the US. After
being launched in 2004 it took almost no time for the creation of a
Harvard University student to make its mark on the world wide web, and probably
the greatest mark people will remember from the age of internet and technology.
Today, millions of people around the world are able to connect to families,
friends, and even make new friends around the world through
Facebook. With Facebook supporting over 40 languages, it is even
easier to put aside cultural differences and language barriers to make new
friends. Facebook, at the least, has played a major role in contributing
to the globalization of today's economies and cultures, bringing people
closer than ever before.

Facebook is a revolutionary social network. The nice thing about it is that it is all inclusive. It doesn't trend itself toward any group. People of all ages, religions, etc. are a part of Facebook without any stigma. It is a great way to reconnect with old friends and network with some new ones. The only downfall Facebook may have is that it takes some of the personality out of meeting and talking with people face-to-face. Hopefully, that won't become a lost art.
I am definitely thankful for facebook. However, I do not like how distracting it has become. Often times students and people in general (myself included) will focus on facebook rather than the task at hand. It is even evident at my work, I have seen managers checking their facebook while they are supposed to be working! And sometimes, I cant help but sneak a peak at facebook when Im supposed to be studying. It's extremely distracting. But despite how distracting it is, without facebook I would not be able to stay connected with my family all the way in the Philippines.
Facebook has a lot of pros and cons but I am ultimately glad to have it!
I think facebooks has its pros and cons. I think we can look at facebook in many directions, the networking system provides us services by keep us closer with are friends and family. The negative parts about facebook is it can be addicting and a distraction to your life in many ways such as going to class and even going to work.
i think sites like facebook are a great tool for our faster growing way of life. it's a great way for me to keep in touch with friends and family in ny on my own time, when it's convenient for me. almost any cons to facebook are user inflicted. we have so much control over the settings and privacy its really up to you what problems will arise, its also in your control how much time you decide to waste on there. its a great tool to keep in touch with people if you have some self control.
Lisa, the point you made about Facebook taking the personality out of face-to-face encounters is spot on. As revolutionary as this technology is, I still fear for future generations and their lack of face to face social skills. People are relying more and more on technology to communicate which could pose as a potential issue during times of: job interviews, relationships, dates, public speaking, or meetings. It seems that people "Facebook Stalk" someone before they really get to know the person. Almost like who you are on Facebook is becoming your identity.
Rose, Nicholas, Jeanette-
All of you made great points that Facebook is indeed a great way to stay in contact, yet at the same time it is becoming a distraction not only in the workplace, but in free-time situations. It is inevitable to see people on their phones in public places, literally living in a Facebook world. Our society is becoming comfortable with it and it has become a part of people's lives. Whether staying in contact with someone who lives far away to chatting with your best friend, this one stop SN experience has without question become addictive. I feel that Facebook should create a function that allows users to temporarily disable the SN so that they are not distracted or tempted to use it during particular times that they need to accomplish a task. If the user could set a block of time that their Facebook would not be accessible and is prohibited, maybe it would take the idea out of their mind and they could get work done without being tempted. This would help those who do not have the self control to get off of Facebook!
